For companies with fewer than 75 users, we recommend Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2.
This suite of products includes the following elements:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - the most up to date operating system from Microsoft with the usual mix of enhanced performance, stability and security.
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 with Microsoft Outlook 2003 – the corporate email system which can be accessed from Microsoft Outlook, a web browser or remotely on a PDA. Expanded email database size is now 75Gb.
- Microsoft Sharepoint Services – internal intranet site for sharing documents, calendars and tasks.
- Windows Server Update Services – automated network wide update and patch management.
- Shared fax service – send and receive faxes across the network.
- Premium version containing Microsoft SQL server 2005 (database management) and ISA Server 2004 (firewall and internet security).
SBS 2003 contains fully functional versions of all the above products. However, there are some limitations, one of which restricts the deployment of the applications to different servers. SBS 2003 R2 is a single server solution which is fine for most small businesses but does not have the scalability for larger organisations. These should consider the full
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 and
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 products.
The full products give far greater flexibility with their deployment and configuration. Applications such as Exchange Server 2003 and SQL server can be installed on different servers giving greater performance and reliability. This approach is recommended for companies with larger IT infrastructures.
