SonicWALL CDP Backup Solutions
TAPELESS BACKUP
The Sonicwall Continuous Data Protection (CDP) solution is a tapeless, backup and recovery appliance. Sonicwall CDP provides automatic, real-time disk based data backup for servers including file, Exchange, SQL database and applications, as well as laptops and PCs. Sonicwall CDP protects files locally to ensure they can be recovered instantly from any point in time. It also includes hands-free, automatic offsite capabilities that satisfy organisations’ disaster recovery requirements. Since the CDP only backs up block level differences within each file, the network is not compromised or impacted.

The Sonicwall Offsite Data Backup Server for the CDP appliance provides hands-free, hassle-free offsite backup and recovery solution that stores data in a secure centre. Data is encrypted with a key that is only known to the end user and is restored directly to a CDP appliance with point and click functionality. This enables organisations to be up and running quickly after a disaster.
Bare metal recovery software (BMR) creates an exact image of an entire server or workstation including operating system files, programs, databases and settings. An entire system can be recovered in minutes through an easy to use wizard driven graphical user interface. Additionally, the BMR software provides local archiving capabilities that allow organisations to store snapshots of their data for extended periods of time to meet industry and government compliance regulations.

There are three backup and recovery solutions we offer:
TAPE BACKUP WITH SYMANTEC BACKUP EXEC SOFTWARE
Tape backup is still one of the best ways to secure your information. As tapes are relatively cheap, it’s cost effective to create a multi tape rotational scheme and, most importantly, to take tapes offsite regularly in case there’s a disaster at your office.
Tape drives come in various capacities from 36Gb to 1.6Tb and are available as internal or external units.
Symantec Backup Exec software gives the interface between your servers and the tape drive and has the following features:
- Multi-server backup to a single tape drive
- Creation of scheduled backup jobs with email notifications
- Simple interface for restoring data
- Modules for backing up open databases online including Microsoft Exchange and SQL server.
- Module for open file backup.
- Intelligent Disaster Recovery module eliminates the need to manually install the OS after a system crash.
The combination of a tape drive with Symantec Backup Exec gives a reliable, cost effective backup solution that’s easy to monitor and restore from.
IMAGING WITH ACRONIS SOFTWARE
Acronis produce software which creates an image of your server, PC or laptop to a single file. This file can be browsed for individual item recovery or used in conjunction with an
Acronis Recovery CD to restore an entire system very quickly and easily. We would set this solution up by supplying an external USB2 hard drive with the software. So if your system ever crashed, the Acronis Recovery CD would recognise the USB hard drive and roll the image back so your system fully recovered. It really is very simple.
Whilst the initial image takes some time to create, daily incremental backup of changes only run quickly and can be scheduled.
This solution is recommended for backing up servers, PCs and laptops. It’s particularly useful for a remote workforce with laptops that don’t have a backup solution.
A recent addition to the
Acronis range is the Universal Restore option. This gives you the flexibility of being able to restore an image to dislike hardware and is particularly useful for rolling out new servers and workstations.
This is a cost effective and very reliable backup medium giving unsurpassed ease of restoring. There is a drawback, however; the backed up data is held on your local site in the vicinity of the source computer. This doesn’t give you good protection in the event of a disaster. Therefore we would suggest a complimentary backup to a removable medium such as tape or DVD.
